Yasser Abed Rabbo, secretary general of the PLO, called it a ‘crime against humanity’ when on August 14 Syrian troops started firing indiscriminately at the Al Ramel Palestinian refugee camp in the Syrian town of Latakia. The prompt condemnation of these acts by the Arab League and the ongoing increase of sanctions against the Syrian crackdown appeared as a clear statement denouncing these events as a further criminal act in a five months long brutal repression by the Assad regime. Si pour certains la révolution semble avoir été consommée, pour d’autres il ne s’agit que de soulèvements préliminaires. Révolution ? Nouvelle ère politique ? Eté israélien ? Prudence oblige, il faut peser ses mots. En Tunisie, en Egypte et en Syrie un véritable soulèvement s’est enclenché; et ces mouvements dont les aboutissements sont incertains demeurent en phase de définition. En Israël, les rues s’agitent désormais, prises d’assaut par les foules depuis maintenant un mois. Les places et les boulevards sont investis par les manifestants, la ville offre aux réseaux virtuels un espace de réalisation; et pourtant, le gouvernement ne titube pas et s’offre au passage le loisir d’augmenter l’électricité de 10 % et d’annoncer la construction de 1 600 nouveaux appartements à Jérusalem Est. It is official. According to Foreign Minister Riyad Al-Malki, the Palestinian National Authority (PA) will present its application for a full UN membership this September at the 66th UN General Assembly. Faced with a peace process in a persistent deadlock and Israeli Prime Minister B. Netanyahu’s continued defiance of the international consensus over a two State solution, the PA has decided to take a unilateral step toward international recognition. This marks the culmination of a two years strategy by Prime Minister Salam Fayed, which has led to wide diplomatic recognition and the building of independent Institutions for the future State of Palestine within the1967 borders. Now the moment is ripe for Palestine to claim its admission as the 194th member state of the United Nations. Continue reading

La flottille pour Gaza n’aura jamais vu Gaza. L’interception, mercredi 20 juillet, du bateau Dignité Al-Karama annonce la fin prématurée d’une aventure que ses organisateurs préféreront probablement oublier, quitte à la rééditer « sous une autre forme », comme l’a promis Thomas Sommer-Houdeville, porte-parole de la flottille. Quelques jours auparavant, la plupart des militants aéroportés de la « flightilla »[1] avaient été empêchés d’embarquer dans les avions qui devaient les emmener en Israël, et la plupart de ceux qui y sont parvenus sont aujourd’hui détenus en attente d’expulsion. Il est à présent temps de tirer un bilan de ces quinze jours. Deux logiques – celle du gouvernement israélien, celle des activistes des flottilles maritime et aérienne – se sont affrontées. Dimanche 15 mai 2011, des milliers de Palestiniens et de sympathisants de la « cause palestinienne » se sont rendus à Maroun el-Rass, au sud du Liban, pour commémorer la Nakba, ou la « catastrophe ». Ce n’était pas la première fois que des manifestations étaient organisées pour ce que l’on nomme le « Nakba Day », mais, il s’agissait cette fois-ci du plus grand rassemblement de Palestiniens à la frontière israélienne depuis 1948.
